The specialty

What is a prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist in replacing and restoring teeth. After dental school, prosthodontists complete at least three additional years of advanced training in complex restorations — from a single crown to rebuilding an entire smile.

  • PlanTreatment planned with the whole smile and bite in mind.
  • RestoreFunction, comfort and a natural appearance.
  • ReplaceMissing teeth, with implants, bridges or dentures.

Know the difference

General dentist vs. prosthodontist

Both care about your smile and your health. Here is how their roles differ, so you can choose the right starting point.

Training

General dentist

Completes dental school and is trained to provide a broad range of dental care.

Prosthodontist

Completes dental school, then an additional accredited residency in prosthodontics, advanced training in replacing and restoring teeth.

Focus

General dentist

Routine care and prevention: checkups, cleanings, fillings and everyday oral health.

Prosthodontist

Replacing and rebuilding teeth: implants, full-mouth rehabilitation, complex or failed cases, smile design, and bite and jaw-joint concerns.

Planning

General dentist

Plans care around your ongoing oral-health needs, one step at a time.

Prosthodontist

Starts from the final result: digital scans and design come first, and the prosthesis is made in our own in-house lab.

Complexity

General dentist

Well suited to most everyday dental needs, and a trusted partner when a case calls for a specialist.

Prosthodontist

Focused on complex situations: several missing teeth, worn or broken teeth, earlier treatment that did not work, or a full-smile change.

Teamwork

They work together. You can keep your general dentist for cleanings and routine care, while a prosthodontist plans and restores more complex work.

When to see a prosthodontist

A prosthodontist’s opinion can help if you have:

  • Missing teeth
  • You wear a denture and would like fixed teeth
  • Worn, chipped or broken teeth
  • Pain when you bite, or jaw-joint discomfort
  • You want to change your whole smile
  • Earlier dental treatment that did not work as hoped

For complex restorative cases, a prosthodontist is the specialist for the job. For checkups, cleanings and everyday care, your general dentist is exactly who you should see. Meet Dr. Roy

Complex restorations, planned with care

  1. Dental implants

Replace one tooth or several with implant-supported restorations, planned by a prosthodontist.

  2. Same-day fixed teeth

When the case allows, some people can leave with fixed teeth the same day. Not every case qualifies; Dr. Roy will tell you what applies to you after an evaluation.

  3. Full-mouth rehabilitation

A complete, coordinated plan to restore function, comfort and appearance across the whole mouth.

  4. Veneers, crowns & smile restoration

Custom restorations designed to look natural and to fit your bite.

  5. Complex dentures & dentures-to-fixed

Complex dentures, and options to move from removable dentures to fixed, implant-supported teeth.

Three ways to replace missing teeth

A quick, general overview to help you prepare your questions.

Implant-supported fixed teeth

Replacement teeth are attached to dental implants placed in the jaw. You do not take them out at home.

How it stays in place
Held by implants in the jawbone.
Daily care
Brush and clean around the teeth as instructed, plus regular checkups.
Good to know
Needs a planned procedure and an evaluation first. Not every case qualifies.

Removable dentures

A set of replacement teeth that you can take out. A partial denture replaces some teeth; a complete denture replaces a full arch.

How it stays in place
Rests on the gums; a partial may clasp onto natural teeth. Some dentures can be held in place by implants.
Daily care
Taken out and cleaned every day, as instructed.
Good to know
Generally does not involve surgery. Fit can change over time, so adjustments may be needed.

Bridge

A fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching a replacement tooth to neighboring teeth or to implants.

How it stays in place
Cemented onto crowns on neighboring teeth, or supported by implants.
Daily care
Clean under and around it with floss threaders or small brushes, as shown by your team.
Good to know
With a tooth-supported bridge, the neighboring teeth are shaped to hold crowns, so they need to be healthy enough to support it.

General information only. Which option suits you depends on your mouth, your health and your goals. A prosthodontist will advise you after an evaluation.
